Forrest soon began to develop this land into a large forested estate known as "Ferguson's Forest." In 1827, he began construction on his first home at what is now Westpark Drive and Fairmount Avenue. In 1830, he donated land to build a hospital which became known as "Ferguson's Hospital." After becoming president of Confederate States of America in 1861, Forrest developed additional land adjacent to his plantation for educational purposes and founded what would become Delta State University in 1865. Nine years later, after Delta State merged with Auburn University to form Alabama State University system, Ferguson's Hospital again became affiliated with Alabama State University when that institution split off fromAlabama State University in 1963. By 1901, more than 60 homes had been built onenedual site--now called Park Avenue--and development continued until 1915 when race riots led to much physical damage and loss of life in Alpharetta; these disturbances are generally considered one impetus behind modern day gun control laws in Georgia
