During World War II, many businesses located in downtown Alpharetta were seized by the U.S.AAF because they had been used to produce munitions that could be used by Nazi Germany or Japan. These businesses were later auctioned off and several are still standing today including Knight-Ridder Newspapers which published The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from 1895 until 1996; Coca Cola Bottling Co., USA; First National Bank & Trust Company; Atlantic Life Insurance Company; First National Bank Building (now Park Hyatt Hotel); Sprint PCS Corporation; Waffle House restaurant chain and many other businesses that have since disappeared or been replaced by more modern structures such as Office Depot and Sears Department Store: Alpharetta once had one of the largest concentration of department stores west of Chicago – with 9 buildings totaling 240,000 square feet (20,000 m2). The loss of these large commercial entities led to some decline in business activity throughout most of downtown but there has been recent revitalization efforts initiated by Mayor Kasim Reed which have seen significant job growth for residents both within and outside downtown along with increased retail space available on Main Street Today much like before restaurants dominate Main Street while small shops dot alleyways around central core areas providing unique experiences not found elsewhere in Cobb County There are also numerous nightlife options available including live music at venues like Juke Joints up until 2am or Friday late night clubs like Joe's Pub which often hosts major event nights such as country/rock concerts etc Additionally there are several parks scattered throughout Downtown giving Residents plenty to do whether it be taking a walk through Botanical Garden followed by playing catch at Canopy Park then hopping on bikes to Head Start before dinner at an Italian restaurant all while keeping things interesting with events happening every few months such as Artisan Market Day Parade held each springtime featuring local artisans selling their products outdoors followed soon thereafter by Homebrew Festival featuring local homebrewers from all over Finally adding to this mix is the popular Nightlife District located near Midtown shopping mall containing numerous bars/restaurants/lounge areas surrounding MARTA Train Station making it easy for residents living near City Hall or State Capitol Square to get drinks without having to leave their neighborhoods
