The history of Alpharetta begins with General John Chilton's Expedition from Savannah to take possession of what is now Alpharetta on October 12th 1802. It was then called "Macon". The town began as a small French settlement and soon became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and good water supplies. In 1824, Greek merchants established a trading post at what is now known as downtown Alpharetta. This gave rise to the name "Alpharetta" which means " spice market." In 1828, General James Hogg traveled through the area and recommended that the town be named after him because he would succeed him when Hogg resigned from command in November of that year. By 1830, Alpharetta had grown sufficiently so that it Reflector House (now part of Dooley University) was built as a hotel for traders and travelers. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Atlanta and much thereof including Alpharetta; however local farmers continued to prosper until World War I when new technologies made farming less profitable than before thanks to advances in transportation and other industries. After WWI endedmany farms were abandoned but some resumed production while others went out of business entirely due to technological advancements such as tractorization which eliminated need for labor on large scale projects such as cotton planting etc., leaving only small-scale production possible giving rise to what we now know as subsistence agriculture prevalent throughout much of Atlantica today

In 1859, Alpharetta became the county seat of Fulton County and a courthouse was constructed on Main Street. In 1865, the first railroad station was built in Alpharetta and later renamed Atlanta Railway Station.
