Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first humans to live in what is now Alpharetta were Creek Indians. The town was founded by John Aiken on July 4, 1819 as an agricultural community that offered goods and services to farmers in the surrounding area. In 1827, Aiken sold his share of the town to James Moultrie who renamed it Alpharetta after his namesake drink – "Alphares" – which he imported from France. Aiken's grandson, John Moultrie Jr., developed what is now known as Moultrie Park and built a home there in 1892 which served as the town hall until 1913 when the present building was erected. The city of Alpharetta was incorporated on February 12, 1907 and named for General Robert E. Lee who had died in 1865 while commanding Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House during the American Civil War. On December 5, 1910, a fire destroyed most of downtown Alpharetta including many homes and businesses; however no one was injured or lost any property due to this event which made it one of the more successful municipal fires in history In 1928, Joplin Road became a major thoroughfare through Alpharetta with shopping centers opening up along its route including Sears Roebuck & Co., Montgomery Ward & Co., Jardine Mason Jar Companies (Jardine Jar Department Store), Goudy Bros., Levy’s department store and finally Marshall Field’s department store before being closed off entirely by 1955 . Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Alpharetta is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a rich history dating back to 1837 when it was founded as an agricultural settlement by Capt. John Soddy and his family. The city first attracted attention when General Sherman's army passed through in December 1864 during his February 1865 march from Atlanta to Savannah. He called upon General Cobb to stop the retreating Union army, but Cobb refused because he did not believe that Sherman would come near him. However, within days of Sherman's visit, Alpharetta had become one of the most important cities in south Georgia because its location on the river made it a strategic crossroads for travel and trade between north Georgia and central Alabama and Tennessee. In 1875, Alpharetta became home to one of America's first professional baseball teams when the town set up a team with help from local businessmen James Milledge and Jno Peattie. The team played its games outdoors on dirt fields until 1889 when they moved into what is now known as Municipal Stadium (now Philips Arena). In 1907, Alpharetta hosted its first NCAA Tournament game against Tulane University before moving again two years later to Municipal Stadium where they continue to play today. Alpharetta also gained notoriety for hosting both the 1984 Summer Olympics which were conducted in nearby Athens and then-Mayor Rick Warren’s annual Christmas parade which drew more than 100,000 people each year downtown until 2005 when street closures caused by Hurricane Katrina forced their move out closer to Philips Arena
