The city had its start as a cotton plantation community with up to 100 slaves working plantations during the early 1800s. The area now known as Alpharetta was originally rural farmland between Marietta and Kennesaw Junction where farming continued until after World War II when large tracts were developed for housing and other uses following the construction of Interstate 285 and other arterial road systems around Atlanta
