Alpharetta, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 137,812 at the 2010 census. Alpharetta is the third-largest city in Fulton County after Atlanta and Savannah. The community of Alpharetta was founded by two Scottish brothers in 1820 as an isolated trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The brothers named their settlement "Alpharetta" after the Italian word for "aluminum." The first settler in what is now Alpharetta was James McMillin who arrived in 1825 from Scotland with his family. He built a cabin on land that he and his brother-in-law purchased from the Native Americans known as the Creekshoote Cherokees. In 1830, Welshman John Thomas erected a log cabin on what is now Walton Drive near present day State Route 341.Thomas served as mayor of Alpharetta from 1835 to 1840 and Indian agent for The Cherokee Nation during this time period. In 1835, he married Fanny Watkins and soon began developing some of today's downtown Alpharetta into what it is today including brick buildings on Pryor Street between Third and First Streets NW., which are still standing today (the original store building at Third and First Streets NW.; later replaced by a bank). During this time period much of modern day Alpharetta consisted of swampy areas that were home to numerous gatherers and basset hounds used for hunting big game such as deer, bear, turkey, quail & partridge. One can still find these animals around town today along with several small farms located throughout the area where they Raise hay or corn etc... After being elected Mayor four times (1840 - 1850), Thomas relocated his family to Nashville Tennessee in 1851 because starting in 1850 there was no lawabiding white person living within three miles of any public building east of Decatur Street (now US 21). Located just northeast of current day's intersection of Pryor and Walton Avenues NW., this area would become known as Commercial Avenue/Walton Road; however given its designation only until 1955 when it was changed to its current name – Boulevard – it has remained largely unchanged over time! In 1861 Thompsons son James moved back to locales between Chattanooga TN & Jasper AL with his bride Cilla May Thomas but due to illness never returned home) . By 1865 James McMillin had died leaving behind 4 children: one daughter Fannie married Wm Hoggs who raised 3 families also resided here before moving away circa 1880) . From here until about 1920 most adult male residents either left or moved out when they got Married then settled down elsewhere

The city's namesake was Alpharetta ( pronounced al-fah-REETA) an early settlement on the Chattahoochee River and its surrounding areas which were founded by Scotsmen in 1785 during the American Revolutionary War under the leadership of General Andrew Jackson. The first African Americans to live in Alpharetta were slaves who worked on plantations owned by white landowners until 1820 when they became citizens of Alpharetta through a process known as "free Negro importation." In 1837, a group of English Quakers from London built what is now called Friends Meeting House #1 adjacent to what is now known as Park View Cemetery. This building served as both their religious and social center for many years until it burned down in 1872. In 1865, three businessmen named John Witherspoon, Augustus Woodward and John Patterson bought 200 acres (80 ha) of land along the Chattahoochee River north of present-day Alpharetta and began development with the help of local entrepreneur James Fenton. They renamed their new town "Alpharetta" after then Governor Arthur Ashe's daughter appraisal title for 5 miles (8 km) west of town limits on what would later become Piedmont Avenue. During World War II, production at Plant Cenedale munitions plant led to increased demand for housing in southeastern Georgia so families moved into factories or subdivisions near Savannah while companies rented space within local schools and community recreation centers such as Braves Field or Centennial Olympic Park until all these places were destroyed duringbombing raids on Atlanta on August 25–September 2 1944 including plant buildings that still stand today including: Fenton Tower; Randolph Automotive Building; Alchitelli Glass Company; McCulloch Tire & Rubber Company Building; Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Annex - home toLockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Inc.; Northrop Grumman Corporation Headquarters annex - also home to ATK Missile Systems Laboratory;; Ryder Transportation Company Building;; Phillips Petroleum Refineries Building;;Post Office building;; Southern Airways Terminal building;; Army Ammunition Plant Administration building.; Allied Signal Corporation Headquarters annex - home to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Inc.; Atlantic Richfield Development Company Headquarters annex - also home Industrial Area Development Zone office developments.- After World War II ended there was continued growth with suburban development taking place around downtowns such as Peachtree Center Drive/Morningside Drive between Second Street NW and Stadium Boulevard SE While most businesses closed during this time period brickyards reopened but declined in importance due to competition from aluminum plants conversions from automobiles into missiles etc..
