It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Alpharetta Federal Correctional Institution. The city is situated on the Chattahoochee River and was founded by John Lewis Gadsden in 1802 as a small settlement on Gadsden's plantation. In 1821, Alpharetta became a town under the jurisdiction of Atlanta. It was incorporated as a city in 1892. In 1959, it became an independent municipality within Fulton County after being refused incorporation by Atlanta. As of the 2010 census, Alpharetta had a total area of 22 square miles (56 km2), making it one of the smallest cities in America with over 20,000 residents. The history of Alpharetta can be traced back to 1802 when John Lewis Gadsden founded what would become Alpharetta on his plantation near present-day downtown Atlanta. At that time there were only about 50 people living in what is now Alpharetta and most were working on Gadsden's cotton plantations downriver from where he lived and raised tobacco plants himself. When General Andrew Jackson moved his army through central Georgia during the US Civil War and captured Savannah in 1865, he burned all but 12 acres (41 hectares) of Gadsden's land - including this original settlement - which lay downstream from what eventually becomes downtown Atlanta. In 1860s there were only 8 or 10 white families permanently settled around modern day downtown Athens; they came mostly from rural areas upriver fromOWNATLANTA & built new homes along Duckworth Road between 1870s-1920s – 3 blocks NE/SW of current Main Street business district today!
