The city was founded on October 16, 1828 by John Hennepin and James Robertson as the town of Alvarado. Alpharetta was named for General Lafayette who fought in America's Revolutionary War. The first permanent settler in what is now Alpharetta was William Cranch who arrived in 1795 from North Carolina with his family. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and planted maize seeds which he named afterwards “Cranch” Creek because he had received it from Colonel Nicholas Colquitt (the father-in-law of Englishman Major James Robertson). In 1800 John Pritchard erected a log cabin on what is now Eldridge Road, northeast corner of present day State Route 470/Alpharetta Boulevard; this became known as Pritchard’s Cabin or Live Oak Grove & later changed to its current name as Alpharetta Courthouse Square due to its location within walking distance from both the original courthouse (now located inside Courthouse Square) and then current City Hall complex building across State Route 470/Alpharetta Boulevard from where it begandates back to at least 1824 when Mrs. Akeley donated land for public square between Courthouse Square and former Post Office Building (now located inside Cemetery Complex). In 1830 Mr. David Ramsay moved into section 3rd Precinct including present day western edge of downtown area which bordered east on Chattahoochee River while remaining part way between First National Bank building (now located insideCourthouse Square)and old Gadsden Jail south side along Second Avenue west side currently occupied by Cobb Energy Center before that date……..This precinct formed today’s eastern edge around downtown core being bounded north on Third Avenue east bound by Atlantic Avenue South then east bounding University DriveSouthwest corner point with Dawson Plaza just off intersection presently occupied by IKEA store…..During early years there were few buildings other than log huts used for farming purposes….By 1840 about 30 homes had been erected but most were abandoned due mainly to lack of money or interest….In 1848 Drury built his home near what is now Main Street which became known as Court House Square…..Hennepin Hotel opened Dec 1st 1850 becoming one of earliest successful business operations in town…..In 1860 Drury again built home here however this time called it “Drury Hotel Annex” still standing today……… By 1870 all but 2 homes had been abandoned leaving only 10 residents living in Court House Square….One home remained until 1880 when Mrs Kapp purchased it & renamed it “Home Place” which still stands today…………The last resident died July 6th 1915 having owned property here since1870…………Today little remains above ground apart from a couple small foundations…………………… Backpacker hostel opens 1970s On November 9th 1830 two men calling themselves "Saul Fergus" came ashore looking for new land to farm after purchasing a tract about three miles long and one mile wide lying northwestward thence northwestward unto Waldo Creek mouth [sic] being offered for sale by Elijah Hawkins [sic] At that time there were no towns or settlements existing within any limits thereof save Fort Payne Indian Reservation farther up stream……………………………When Evan Jenkins organized the Government Of Georgians under Constitution dated March 4th 1792 he again proposed changing boundaries Burgundian territory extending downriver so that it should include all lands lying within 5 leagues [10 miles]of Savannah River founding site bearing that name…………At Council Meeting held at fort Payne November 11th 1792 ordered Santa Fe traders be sent out reconnoitering better sites for trade…………… receiving news they landed at Point Lookout December 12nd 1792 finding several townsNWSW Cornerof Chickamauga Creek Townsite Named Ewell soon afterward……….Evan Jenkins appointed __Governor__ over those areas…………………… On January 8 th 1800 Abraham Baldwin acquired 640 acres adjacent NW corner Chickamauga Creek Townsite From Andrew Pickens………………………..It appears ewas Tryon trying to gain control over much southeastern Tennessee during these years.............................As events would have it boundary changes occurred more frequently than planned.........................On January 23d 1800GEORGE ROGERSClark attacked Fort Nashboro Southeastern Georgia Militia resulted戦争で敗れてしまうというニュースが流れ始めたものだったが、Evan Jenkins appointed Abraham BaldwinGovernor Over Those Areasになることは無くしている。AGAINST ALL INTEREST OF GEORGE ROGERS Clark did not receive full pardon even though Ulysses S Grant awarded him one……...Fulton County never regained its original boundaries until 1865 when Reed Act created Lauderdale County…………………….......Land sales continued intermittently through most parts o f our history continuing until 1900…………The first post office opened May 14 th 1829............................................................
