In 1861 Coca Cola began production here at its original location on Court Street between Second and Third Streets while many other businesses followed suit over the next few years including Jardine & Co., O’Keefe & Sons grocery company (later Peachtree Industries), W dry goods store ( later Sam’s Club), Piggly Wiggly Store No 1 ( later Jewel-Osco), Ford dealership (later Mercury) and more than 20 restaurants including Joe's Pizza which opened its doors on October 6th 1912 becoming one of America's earliest pizza places In 1951 successful efforts were made to annex parts of Carrollton withalpharettanshiningandmachinebuildingbecomingincreasinglyimportantinthatregionduringthe1950sand1960shelpingtopromotealpharetTA economy statewide In 1967 Interstate 85/US-1 split from I-85 near Roswell and entered into what is today called "Downtown" Alpharetta with most commercial development taking place east of that point . By 1980 employment levels had dropped below 50 thousand people making job growth difficult during this period . However during the early 1990s economic resurgence led to new investment , such as an effort to remake downtown into something more retailable During the late 1990s through 2000 there were several large fires that destroyed much property Damage occurred across Downtown
