Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 34,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta–Fulton metropolitan statistical area. The city was founded by John Mercer and named after the daughter of his friend General James Robertson. Mercer's fortune came from land he acquired in what is now Alpharetta. He donated $1 million to build the first public school in town, which opened its doors on November 12, 1881. By 1907, Alpharetta had a population of 27,000 and was one of the leading agricultural towns in southern Georgia. In 1911, Alpharetta became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four councilors. That year saw the opening of Chattahoochee River Park - one of the first municipally-owned parks in America - and another major civic development when Atlantans voted to annex portions of neighboring Gwinnett County to form their new city limits. During World War II, Alpharetta played an important role as a military airfield for Allied forces; it was home to both Army Air Forces Station Conyers (later Davis-Monthan AFB) and Navy Air Station Fort Worth (now Naval Air Station Pensacola). The university campus adjoining downtown also served as an aircraft maintenance hangar for relocated Boeing B-29s during World War II; more than 1,000 planes were parked there at any given time during wartime! On October 15th 1959 – just over five decades after its founding – Alpharetta adopted its current name: “Alpharetta” – becoming only the second municipality in Georgia to do so since Metropolis incorporation (the others being Sylvestertown). Despite some challenges (such as experiencing rapid population growth that outpaced infrastructure capacity), including several years where total municipal revenues fell short by double digits due largely to tax increases championed by then Mayor Lenora Hill), Antonio Street became home to many successful businesses such as Hooters restaurant chain founder Chuck Epps' father's cotton gin business until it closed its doors in 2016 amidst concerns about gentrification coming through nearby Abercrombie & Fitch stores chains like Saks Fifth Avenue And Givenchy boutiques like Gucci handbags etc.; however even though this has led some people within townspeople to refer to their "new" City Limits community as "Antonstown", overall unemployment rates have remained steady or decreased over past few decades while median household income has increased manifold making Alpharettanites among one of most prosperous communities within metro ATLANTAN area today".
Alpharetta was founded by the Petit family in 1872. The first store on what is now Alpharetta Street was opened by the father, Pierre Petit. By 1890, there were six stores in Alpharetta. In 1902, the company merged with two other businesses to form the American Rubber Company. The merger led to a decline in sales at the stores and also led to some restructuring within the company. The American Rubber Company went bankrupt in 1912 and Alpharetta Shopping Center was built on what is now US-1 south of downtown Alpharetta. The center became home to several major retailers including JCPenney, Sears Roebuck, Macy's and Neiman Marcus before it closed in 1978 due to suburban redevelopment.
