First elected Mayor George Hicks went on to serve as mayor from 1907-1912 before being appointed Assistant Secretary of War under President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 In 1920 he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor against incumbent Jno Peebles Sr., becoming Atlanta's first African American mayor After years of hard work and dedication by many residents, including Drs John Witherspoon (founder & president emeritusof Dental Associates), Rev James Hinton (bishop Emeritusof Augusta)and Rev Hiram Fuller (president & CEOOf Home Depot), Ralph McGilliveny became Mayor with a term ending December 31st 1925 . He had won via runoff election against outgoing Mayor John Witherspoon Jr.. During his time as Mayor,alpharedta saw heavy industrialization with businesses like United States Steel opening up shop here during this time period making him well-known throughout southeast Georgia McNamara Road also underwent major renovation during this time frame with new paving, sewers, lights etc coming down from across town Additionally, Alphaship Pool opened up in 1928 whichSoon became one of Atlantas favorite swimming spots
