Alpharetta is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). The name "Alpharetta" comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where the water fogs rise." In 1802, General James Wilkinson named this place after Captain John Alpheus Webb of HMS Beagle who had explored the coast of South America during that year's expedition. The community was first established as an agricultural village on April 12, 1857 by subscription from citizens of Athens and Decatur counties. The first post office was opened in 1860 under the name of Athens Post Office; it was changed to Alpharetta in 1865. In 1886, Alpharetta became one of twelve communities withinAtlanta City Limits which were consolidated into Atlanta Municipal District No. 2 pursuant to Act No. 287 of 1887. On November 5, 1895, amendments to Section 1-2-5 of the Municipal Code were passed by a vote of all City Council members present and signed by Mayor George Wofford; these amendments provided for cooperative irrigation systems with other municipalities within Atlanta Municipal District No. 2 and directed that energy production be used to improve public transportation services withinAtlanta Municipal District No. 2 through municipally owned electric companies such as Atlantahast Electric Railway Company (AER) and Atlantahast Gas Transmission Company (AGTC). On July 1, 1899 – less than two months after incorporation - Akron Electric Light & Power Company bought out AER for $1 million dollars ($100 million today). On December 12th 1904 – less than three years after incorporation - Guardian Life Insurance Company acquired control over AGTC for $15 million dollars ($290 million today). In 1916 Guardian Life created Guardian Savings Bankruptcy Trust Co., Incorporated which became one of Atlanta's largest banking institutions with assets totaling $362 million at its peak in 1928 when it had assets totaling more than $1 billion! In 1943 – less than six months before World War II began – United States Steel Corporation purchased controlling interest in United States Paper Products Corporation for $4 million dollars ($40 billion currently)! All major textile mills shut down during World War II but Alpharetta continued to produce paper products until 1955 when UPPH closed its doors forever! In 1970 United Paperworkers Local 601 won their first victory against management when they successfully challenged union representation at their plant! Three years later they won another victory when they successfully challenged management's proposal to convert their paper product line from bales/tons per day (BPD) to sacks/tons per day (SDP)! This victory markedthe beginningof what would be an uninterrupted 35 year struggle for workers' rights at UA local 601! However impressive these accomplishments may seem today given our current economic environment - UA local 601 continues to face numerous challenges including wage theft, discrimination against female employees and retaliation against outspoken union representatives! Today there are only five full-time employees working at UA local 601 while over ninety percent of our output comes from contract production! Despite these challenges however we continue to fight hard every day because we know that if we stand together we can achieve anything!!

On May 5th 1865 General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered at Chattahoochee River Bridge near Alpharetta after leading his army through Georgia during the Battle of Atlanta; this event marks one-fourth century anniversary since that battle took place near here! Aftermath of 1865 war saw many African Americans escaping slavery and fleeing to Sherman’s March to Mexico which started on April 9th 1866 followed by Sherman’s march upamae New England corridor until he reached Atlanta on September 3rd 1866; ultimately ended when US Grant defeated Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House Virginia on April 14th 1865 which marked end of Confederate rule over Georgia
