By 1800, Albany had become one of the largest towns in Alabama with a population over 50,000 people living within sight of each other on two main streets – Meeting Street (now Broad Street) and Rutledge Avenue (now Western Avenue). In 1819, Albany merged with neighboring towns Stringfellowville (to the east), Coweta (to the north), Selma (to the west) and Dunwoody (tothe south) to form a new municipality known as Athens County which included much more than present-day Albany. This move allowed Athens County more authority over local government affairs while still providingsufficiency resources for local communities through land sales, taxation and highway building projects throughout central Georgia during this time period.- After years oF growth & development, Albany reached its peak population & prosperity around 1850 when construction began on what would later be known as downtown Albany which featured elegant brick buildings dating back to that decade including George Washington's home "Fairview". 3rd Ward Alderman William Goodloe soon saw opportunityin this growing community & championed aggressive planning& redevelopment efforts which led to today's defining skyline features including State Capitol Building & Oneonta Mall
