In the early 1800s, Albany, Georgia was a small farming community of about 1,000 people. The town was located on the French Broad River and its only way to get water was by boat. About two-thirds of the population lived in one large building on the east side of town. One evening in 1824, a group of gentlemen from Athens, Georgia decided to take a walk around Albany. They were looking for some new land to purchase and when they came across an old millstream that crossed the French Broad River near where present-day Interstate 75 intersects it, they decided to check it out. While walking down the millstream, they noticed something strange going on downstream: The water had stopped flowing! When they asked someone at home what was happening, they learned that a man named John Sibley had built an artificial stream upstream to keep water running in his mill while he operated it. The gentlemen returned home and reported their findings to their friends in Athens. A few days later, Sibley sent someone back downriver to check out what was going on and found that the stream still wasn't flowing - probably because he hadn't properly dammed it off! He ordered his son-in-law to do it right away and within a week or so everything had been fixed! After this event happened, Albany quickly became known as "the city of opportunity." Due in part to this artificial stream and other improvements made by Sibley and others like him, Albany became one of America's most prosperous towns during its early years.
