In 1755, during the French and Indian War, General James Oglethorpe founded Savannah with land he acquired along the Chattahoochee River south ofpresent-day Albany – including present-day Augusta – for £500 (). In 1821, Governor John Broughton signed an ordinance creating Alabamian Territorial District No. 1 with headquarters at what would be renamed Albany in 1825; it included all modern Fulton County save for parts now located in DeKalb County and Roswell County east of Interstate 85 (). The district served asGeorgia's capital until 1859 when Athens became the state capital again following Reconstruction.. After years spent debating plans for its future location due to changing economic conditions and growth around it throughout much of the 19th century–including several moves from downtown to various suburbs—Albany reached its current form through annexations over time by other municipalities including Griffin (1901), Dunwoody (1904), Gwinnettville (1920), Peachtree City (1932) and Brookhaven (1982). On July 12, 1886 there was another annexation when Albion merged with Acworth into Acworth & Albion Counties Borough...the merger did not materialize because Albion voters rejected incorporation into any political entity larger than itself

However, despite its struggles during this time period, Albany has remained an important cultural and economic center in the state today. Several notable individuals have been born or died there including author Jhumpa Lahiri and business magnate James Buchanan Richardson.
Albany, Georgia was founded in 1785 by James Smith and his family. The town was named for the Albany River, which lay to the east of the village. In 1823, Albany became a part of Macon County. In 1912, it became a part of Gwinnett County. In 1932, it became a part of Cobb County.
