On July 9, 1871, the Albany County Courthouse was burned down in a fire that destroyed much of the building. The courthouse had been built in 1865 by a group of local entrepreneurs and business people led by J.P. Morgan. The new courthouse replaced an earlier structure on the same site that was destroyed in a fire in 1854. The original courthouse was designed by architect James Strickland and built on the model of Springfield, Massachusetts's New England Courthouse. It was located at what is now Fulton Avenue and Third Street in downtown Albany. A second courthouse was built on the same site between 1865 and 1868, again using Strickland's design. This structure served as the county seat until 1895 when it moved to Athens, Georgia due to financial reasons. The Albany County Courthouse still stands today, standing as one of only a few remaining examples of early 20th century American courthouses both statewide and locally (the others being located in Louisville, Kentucky; Des Moines, Iowa; and Buffalo, New York). It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

They left behind a community that prospered until World War II when bombing raids destroyed most of the structures in the city center and overall economy crashed due to lack of investment in new housing and businesses after Pearl Harbor brought about Japan's entry into World War II and increased military spending throughout Georgia by both sides
