Albany is a small town located in the eastern district of Fulton County, Georgia. It was founded by the Susquehanna Company in 1793 and named after Albany, New York. The first store opened in 1807 and the population of Albany reached 1,500 by 1830. The town was consolidated with other towns in 1875 and became a part of Atlanta. In 1898, Albany was incorporated as a city and has since grown to be one of the leading cities in Georgia. The history of Albany goes back to 1793 when the Susquehanna Company established a trading post near what is now Albany, Georgia. The company had come overland from Pennsylvania and were looking for new land to settle after their failed attempt to establish settlements on Long Island. They landed at Whatcom Island on September 7th, 1793 and began construction on their trading post which they named "Albany". In 1807, the town's population reached 1,500 people thanks to the efforts of local entrepreneurs John Burtis and James Dickey who built stores and taverns around the original post office building which still stands today (pictured below). In 1875, Albany merged with nearby towns including Milledgeville (now parts of Decatur) and Carrollton (now part of Roswell). This decision made Athens much larger than eithertown had been before - it now boasted a population of more than 100,000 people! During this time period there were many technological advances such as electric lights being installed in buildings throughout Athens – this was also during an era where transportation was improving such as horse-drawn cars becoming less common. In 1898, following annexation by Atlanta – GA., Albany became one of its largest cities with a population greater than 500,000 people! Today it remains one of Athens' most vibrant neighbourhoods filled with businesses such as restaurants, nightclubs and theaters – all within walking distance or just minutes’ drive from any downtown neighbourhood!
Albany is a city in the southeastern United States. The population was 25,946 at the 2010 census and is the county seat of Albany County. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first Cherokee settlement in what is now Albany was called "Tugaloka". The town was founded by settlers from Georgia in 1802 as a farming village on Catawba Creek. The name may be derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where water flows abundantly." In 1812, Albany became the capital of Georgia and it has been its state capital since 1868. In 1840, Union General Nathaniel Lyon destroyed part of Cherokee Nation's capital of Wilkesboro because he felt that the Cherokees were not loyal to the United States. Nathaniel Lyon's actions helped spur development in central and eastern Georgia, which led to increased trade with Indian nations and more investment by white people into their new region. Eventually, many African Americans moved to central and eastern Georgia during this time period as well, creating a diversity that persists to this day. A construction boom followed throughout Jackson County during Reconstruction following World War II; Albany's downtown became one of the most heavily industrialized areas in south Alabama after war production shifted from Louisville to north Alabama due to wartime shortages of goods south of Mobile Bayou. This growth led to significant pollution problems that remain today; however, recent efforts have resulted in large-scale redevelopment plans for Albany’s core neighborhoods including cleaned up infrastructure and a new library/museum complex on Canal Street
