This event led to violent clashes between anarchists and law enforcement that continues to this day; one killed an officer and injured several others during the rioting that followed. In 1871, construction began on Washington–Dixon Railroad overpass near today's downtown Albany including plans for a Waffle House restaurant called The Pigallee Shack (now closed). After years of debate surrounding whether or not to build it, finally in 1923 Congress approved $10 million for the project which included creating two neighborhoods: One around the intersection of Broad Street and Marietta Streetknown today as Midtown Albany and another around State University Boulevardand DeKalb Avenueknown today as Downtown Albany. It wasn't until 1957 when Interstate 20 was completed linking Atlanta with southern Michigan that Downtown Albany lost much of its commercial center due to suburbanization; however Midtown Albany has since regained some prominence with recent development including multiple buildings located along Broad Street near Marietta Street that house businesses such as Macy's Department Store chain and JBL Records store among others
