Acworth is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Acworth was James Laidlaw, who arrived in 1785. The town site was chosen because it could support a small settlement and had good water access. Laidlaw named his place "Acworth" after the estate of Lord Exeter, which he saw while travelling through England on his way to become a general in the American Revolution. In 1811 James Ayer laid out a township within present-day Acworth City limits. In 1821 Abraham Baldwin purchased land adjacent to Laidlaw's original holdings and laid out Baldwin TownshipFurther westward in 1827 Samuel Lovell laid outLovell Township (later renamed Acworth). In 1829 John Chilton entered into an agreement with Thomas Walker for the purchase of 3 square miles (8 km²) of land northeast ofAcworth from him for $5 per acre ($100 per km²), making it one of the largest transactions ever made in Fulton County history. Chilton's addition to Acworth added another 145 residents to its population by 1830; this growth continued until Village Green annexed buildings along US Highway 285 near present-day Peachtree Road around 1900 AD when Highway 285 became I-285 traffic circle and most people left for more spacious neighborhoods closer to downtown Atlanta or other major cities outside Fulton County.. A new courthouse was built on State Route 143 (present day US 41) southwest of town between 1912 and 1914 as part of plans to create a unified community throughout Cobb County that would serve as county seat for both Cobb and Gwinnett counties; however, soon afterward administrative offices were moved back eastward from downtown Atlanta so that Acworth lost its role as county seat and reverted back to its original name only about 1950.. It wasn't until 1930 when Walter Peed bought some additional land southeast of town from Chilton that development really began; Peed Water Works LLC was formed in 1935 as one result.. By 1940 there were over 1,000 people living inAcworth with 150 businesses employing over 100 workers.; however World War II interfered with many economic opportunities resulting in 2/3s desegregation within public schools followed by massive African American exodus leaving poverty stricken communities behind., In 1951 Alabama Briscoe appointed George Washington Payne directorate general education department within state government – Payne envisioned creating segregated high school system integrating all races starting grades 8-12 thereby decentralizing educational decision making away fromAtlanta’s white elites,, By 1957 approximately 75% black residents had departed Acsworthommunity property transferring their social networks residing primarily eastside also ensued rapid white flight,,,, 1960 saw first interracial wedding celebrated at home Of “Marcela” & “Leonard Hill” At this time ½ acre lot next door To old White School House turned Interracial Community Center where dances nightly thruout summer months attracting 25+ families mostly Afroamericans,,,, acorn theater opened July 1961 Featuring world premiere play “To Allthe Boys I've Loved Before” Produced by Negro Playwrights League script & directed by Noble Sissle
