Acworth, Georgia is a small town located in the Chattahoochee Valley of Georgia. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Acworth is one of the oldest municipalities in the state and has been around since 1853 when it was incorporated as a town. It became an independent city on December 3, 1914. The history of Acworth begins with early settlers who arrived in what is now Acworth in 1853. The community was first called "Natchez" after General Nathaniel Banks, who had commands at Fort Donelson during the war for independence. By 1860, there were only about 25 people living in Acworth. By 1871, there were over 200 residents and by 1879, it had reached its present size of 1,711 residents. One important event that took place in Acworth's early years was the Battle of Gaines' Mill which occurred on April 9th, 1865. The battle resulted in victory for Confederate forces and led to significant changes for the community as they emerged victorious from this engagement which helped solidify their status as an Independent City within Georgia. Over time, various businesses and industries have developed within Acworth including printing and publishing companies such as Humble & Co., Sperry & Hutchinson (later Sperry Rand), Wm Copley & Sons Paper Merchants Company (laterRand McNally), First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) and more recently FedEx Ground Incorporated (). Today much of the historic district still exists within downtownAcworth with numerous local businesses remaining open today including many that are still active more than 100 years later!
The Battle of Acworth was fought on November 2, 1864, in the town of Acworth, Georgia. The battle lasted three hours and resulted in a Union victory.
