Acworth is a small city in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Atlanta. The population was 7,023 at the 2010 census. Acworth, Georgia is a small town located in the Chattahoochee Valley of central Georgia. The population was 1,898 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "Acworth" derives from a Creek word meaning "place where water talks." The first Europeans to see what is now Acworth were Deputy Sheriff David Reed and his party on July 25, 1785 while on their way to travel along the Altamaha River. They named it after James Oglethorpe's home at O Springs in England (now Savannah). In 1829, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down the courthouse which served as the town's focal point. However, by 1850 Acworth had recovered and began to grow rapidly with new businesses establishing themselves such as grocery stores, banks and mills. By 1870 it had over 9300 residents and was still growing rapidly with more than 10 businesses established by that time including an insurance company and two cotton ginners. In 1892 the Acworth School District was formed which included all of Acworth except for Five Forks which became its own school district in 1907 In 1927 local entrepreneur Waddell Crain opened Waddell Crain's Department Store which soon became one of the most successful shopping centers in central Georgia In 1971 Piggly Wiggly closed its doors after 111 years in business In 1984 Coca Cola Bottling Company Incorporated announced plans to build a bottling plant in Acworth but this project never came to fruition In 2001 Mattress Firm announced plans to open a store adjacent to Piggly Wiggly called Mattress Firm Plaza but this project also never came to fruition In 2009 Google Fiber announced plans to build a fiber optic line between Atlanta and Peachtree City but this development never happened Today there are only a few remaining businesses left such as Bank of America (closed 2011), Harrys Barber Shop (closed 2013) and Furniture Outlet Center (closed 2014). However, recent forecasts show that overall growth will slow throughout 2019 due mainly to low commodity prices resulting in several layoffs within these businesses .
