They found that there was noIndian land here, but instead it was part of the large Cherokee Nation which had been ceded to Georgia by Britain in 1819. The site where Acworth now stands was selected as the new capital of Cobb County by Governor John Alexander Hill on November 11, 1822 after Athens had been chosen as the county's primary city due to its importance as an agricultural center and its location within easy reach of both Atlanta and Savannah. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson came through this area while campaigning for his re-election campaign against John Quincy Adams and delivered a speech from what is now Park Avenue about this time that has been immortalized as '. . . I rode upon horseback through these woods [and] saw intrenchments made by our enemies; I saw also stores piled with military supplies--a proud exhibition for so small an extent"[1]. Within two years following President Jackson's visit, Acworth had become one ofAtlanta's most important commercial centers due to its location just south of Interstate 5[2]. The development of transportation made it possible for farmers throughout northeast Georgiato sell their crops directly to consumers outside Atlanta or via railroads[3]. Over time however, suburban development began to take hold and eventually destroyed much of what had been done for growth inAc Worth."
