Acworth is a city in Augusta County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,828 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Augusta County. The Acworth Historic District is a national historic district that contains over 140 buildings and sites dating from the 18th century to the present. The first permanent settler in what is now Acworth was James Auld who arrived in 1793. In 1812, Johnnie Caldwell settled here and started a small distillery which still operates today. In 1815, Isaac Asbury purchased this land from James Auld and began building his own small town on it called Asbury Springs. After several years of construction he sold his holdings to John Cobb who founded Acworth proper in 1825. Cobb renamed it after himself and kept all of the original lots for himself including the current courthouse square on which he built his home and Masonic Lodge House (now the Acworth Museum). During Reconstruction Acworth became an important center for black Americans during the New Deal era due to its large black population and its good transportation connections to Atlanta through railroads. Unfortunately, during World War II much of these gains were lost as Acworth was bombed by German bombers during World War II as part of Operation Torch/areth Bayou Campaign. After the war Acsworth experienced rapid growth with many new homes being built as people returned home from overseas deployments or military service; however, most development stopped until late-1960s when Interstate 95 was constructed through eastern Augusta County and nearby towns increased access to jobs in downtown Atlanta while bypassing downtown Acworth. Today much of downtown includes restaurants, nightlife, arts & culture venues, education facilities etc., while smaller portions are associated with manufacturing businesses such as plastics production or furniture assembly plants
In 1821, Acworth was founded as a small community on the Chattahoochee River by General James Hindman. The town quickly grew and became an important center of trade and industry in the region. By 1875, Acworth had a population of 2,500 people and was one of the most prosperous towns in Georgia. In 1916, Acworth was renamed after George Washington Carver, who helped to create the town's agricultural economy.
