The Acworth, GA history begins in the early 1800s when a group of settlers arrived in what is now Acworth. The group was made up of farmers, mechanics and their families who worked on the land. They began to build homes and businesses around 1820. By 1830, the Acworth community had a school and a post office. In 1835, the Acworth School District was formed and by 1840, there were five churches in the town. The community grew even more as people from surrounding villages came to live here. In 1851, Acworth became part of Kershaw County which increased its population by 50%. During this time, Acworth experienced some growth and development. It acquired an arsenal in 1861 and also started construction on its first hospital in 1865. In 1870, it became a county seat with John A. McLaughlin becoming its first mayor. The following year saw another growth period forAcworth as people moved into new houses and businesses nearby. In 1872-1873,Acworth hosted the Georgia State Fair which attracted many visitors from throughout Georgia and beyond! In 1901-1902, World War I affected Acworth as many residents left to serve in the war effort. However, within two years of returning home, most of these residents had regained their homes and businesses back! during World War II , additional housing developments sprang up all around town but no one ever lived in them because so few people wanted to move away during that time! After World War II ended things quickly returned to normal with no real change taking place until 1964 when local physician Drayton Wagoner purchased 5 acres adjacent to downtown for use as his medical clinic/office complex known today as Wagoner Medical Center! This event led to significant redevelopment over subsequent years including construction of several schools (includingtoday’s Northside High School), widened streets through annexation of adjoining neighborhoods (includingthe predominantly black Southside neighborhood) &the erection of numerous high-rise buildings Downtown – among them Atlanta’s tallest structures at that time – only serving as a backdrop for more recent retail development lining Peachtree Street NE.. Today’s skyline is worth seeing not just for its architecture but also for how much has changed since then; largely due to suburbanization across Atlantans….
