The Acworth area was once a small farming community in the northern part of Georgia. It was first settled by families from South Carolina in the early 1800s. After more than two years of discussion, city council decided against moving the hall and voted instead to build a new library on Market Street within central park. However, this plan met with strong resistance from residents who felt that their neighborhood would be lost if the library were moved away from their homes. During World War II,Acworth experienced significant growth due to munitions manufacturing which occurred throughout much of northeastern Georgia due to World War II shortages of other resources such as foodstuffs. In 1954, after many years of planning and construction over several months at cost of $1 million dollars ($100 million today),the first larger shopping mall ever built in northeast Georgiaopened its doors at Central Park Mall near Interstate 85 nestled between two large hotels - one owned by Coca Cola Company (now PepsiCo) and one run by Sears Roebuck & Company (now Kmart).
