Acworth is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 5,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and straddles both sides of the river. The Acworth School District serves Acworth and portions of neighboring Dunwoody, which are also smaller towns in metro Atlanta. The tiny community had a population of 3,611 as of 2010. Acworth is one of several small towns that were centerpieces of stagecoach travel through what is now Fulton County during the 1800s and early 1900s to provide access to jobs in central Georgia for blacksmiths, farmers and other white-collar workers who built roads and bridges throughout Fulton County. By 1876, all but 12 residents had left or been forced out due to white flight from newly opened African American neighborhoods in east Atlanta after slavery ended in 1865. One hundred years later approximately 60% (including 30% blacks)of Acworth's current population are black heritage descendants

Acworth, Georgia is a small town located in Dekalb County, Georgia. It was founded in 1837 and has been inhabited by the same people since then. The Acworth community sits on a rise that overlooks the Chattahoochee River. In 1870, Acworth organized as a village under the name of East Acworth. On February 15th, 1897, it became a town and was renamed after General James A. Garfield. As of the 2010 census, Acworth had a population of 579 residents. The history of Acworth begins with three men who were part of an effort to found farming communities in what is now Dekalb County. These men were Andrew Johnson (1806-1868), John Marshall (1795-1881), and Ebenezer Cobb (1821-1900). They set out from their homes on December 6th, 1837 to establish new settlements in what is now Dekalb County. Their goal was to create farms that could support large families and provide economic opportunities for their respective townships within the county. Unfortunately for them, they did not have enough success with this plan and all but one of their townships remained uninhabited until after President James Kenedy’s Proclamation creating Cherokee Nation allowed white settlers into those areas on January 1st, 1840. This left Andrew Johnson’s original settlement at Jonesborough as the only known example of an entire township remaining unoccupied until 1861 when Williamsontown joined forces withAcworth to form a new township named after Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest (1786-1865), one of America’s leading generals during the War Between States (1812-1814). The Acworth community is located in northeastern Georgia, approximately 20 miles east of Atlanta. The area was first settled by the Cherokee people in the early 1800s. In 1836, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered the removal of all Cherokee from Georgia, including Acworth. The community was platted in 1839 and named after General James Oglethorpe, who served as governor of Georgia from 1785 to 1789. The first stores were built in Acworth and the population grew rapidly during the 19th century. In 1871, Acworth became a county seat and it remained so until 1959. During that time, it experienced growth due to its location and accessibility to nearby cities such as Atlanta and Savannah. After becoming a city, Acworth experienced continued growth through the 20th century until it reached its current size in 2006.
