However, during World War I the town lost much of its economic importance due to participation in both the Allied and Axis forces. During World War II over one hundred thousand people employed in agriculture evacuated or left when gasoline became available only within three miles of their homes; however manufacturing remained strong until after the war ended with decline starting immediately afterwards. Since 2000 most growth has come from retail development with an increase in small businesses including restaurants and independent retailers catering to residents who are increasingly suburbanized or have no community center close by that they can use for social activities such as music festivals or large-scale events such as Fourth of July fireworks displays

In 1840, Acworth became the capital of Chattahoochee County and a seat of government for the entire county. On October 1, 1868, Acworth became an independent city after being annexed by Atlanta. In 1954 Acworth became a state-chartered city and has since undergone many changes including becoming one of the most diverse cities in America with an estimated population of over 79,000 people as of 2016 The town began as a Methodist mission station on June 4, 1820 when Reverend James Gist and his wife Anna founded what would become known as “Acworth” on land that they had bought from the Creek Nation. At first it consisted only of twenty-six settlers - all Methodists - who lived in huts made from logs gathered from local woods. One year later there were seventy settlers living in tents erected on land given to them by John Kingwood, one ofAcworth's original landowners. By 1830 about eighty percent ofthe settlement's inhabitants were Methodists; however tensions between these denominations led to several religious riots throughout early 21st century Georgia The first school opened in Acworth on December 6th 1830 under the guidance of Revd Dr John Aulds[2]. For two years Revd Aulds taught children from poor homes while he also served as pastor at nearby Milledgeville Baptist Church . After his death in 1835 barnraising funds enabled Mr Green to build a schoolhouse which opened its doors to students on January 3rd 1836[3] . soon after classes began bible reading clubs and other activities flourished among those young men responsible for teaching future generations In 1840 Blanchard Academy was chartered with instruction offered primarily to girls but within ten years boys had also been admitted In 1861 Mrs Fannie Chapman donated land along Canelo Road east of town for a Female Seminary which would eventually be called Southern Christian University (SCU) . With SCU growing rapidly enrollment swelled rapidly and new buildings were needed so that by 1870 nearly halfa million dollars had been raised through donations alone! Reverend J B Price assumed charge at SCU upon Price’s installation as president pro tempore on September 15th 1870[4] making him Americas first black college president In 1896 construction began on what would become known as Georgia State Capitol Complex including two massive limestone towers housing both statehouses – one across Broad Street from First Baptist Church (now home to Ponce de Leon High School) – and Governor’s Mansion located just south across Spring Street off Interstate 75 [5] From this location Thomas Ewing could survey legislative districts before voting took place or granting permits for large projects such as roads or bridges
The Acworth area was first settled in 1819 by the Acworth Cherokee. The town was founded on a prominence on the Chattahoochee River, about southwest of present-day Atlanta. It grew rapidly due to its location and timber production. In 1846, the town was renamed for General Robert E. Lee, who had been mortally wounded at Appomattox Court House during the American Civil War. After his death, Congress passed a resolution proclaiming that Robert E. Lee be given “the honorary title of General in recognition of his eminent services to our country”. The town continued to grow and become an important center for trade and commerce until around 1910 when it began to decline as a result of economic factors such as improved transportation access and changing demographics.
