Acworth is a small town in northwest Georgia, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by George Washington Woodward and his brother-in-law, James Weldon Johnson. Woodward became an early settler and began to develop the land that now makes up Acworth. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first school was built in 1860. In 1865, Acworth became a county seat of DeKalb County after it was merged with Macon County. In 1898, Acworth incorporated as a city under the name of "Acworth". That year saw one of the most significant milestones for Acworth when its library opened its doors to the public. Since becoming a city, Acworth has seen many changes; however, its economy remains largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. Today's main industry is education; Acworth has several colleges and universities located within its boundaries including Georgia Tech University and Kennesaw State University. Additionally, there are numerous small businesses throughout the town that provide goods and services to residents such as construction companies or home builders/repairmen. Rachel was an excellent businesswoman and helped develop Acworth as one of the most vibrant towns in pre-Civil Rights America. Mrs. Hill's descendants continue to reside in Acworth and are active members of its community today. They are also responsible for many important cultural advancements within their town including establishing theAcworth Folklore Museum which preserves local history and folklore. In addition, they have worked tirelessly to support various charitable organizations throughout their hometown, such as The Acworth School District which has furnished educational opportunities for generations of students from all backgrounds.
In 1801, Acworth was founded by a group of landowners who named it after General Nathanael Greene. The town grew quickly and soon became one of the most important settlements in Georgia. In 1820, Acworth was made the county seat of Cobb County. In 1851, Acworth was renamed Atlanta and served as its capital from 1851-1857. From 1861-1865, Atlanta was occupied by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The city was eventually re-established as an independent city after the war ended.
