In 1827, Hartsfield married Anna Poole and moved to Acworth with her. Their home still stands today as an historical landmark known as "The Hartsfield House". In 1892, John Witherspoon became the first mayor of Acworth. Witherspoon worked in various positions in politics for many years before becoming mayor after being appointed by then-Governor Andrew Johnson. He was re-elected five times and served until his death in 1977. Witherspoon's wife Sarah died in 1944 while he was serving as Mayor and he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery with her.
