Acworth, Georgia is a small town in Atlantia County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Atlantia County. The first European to visit what is now Acworth was the French explorer and trader François de La Salle on his mapping expedition named "Voyage d'Or" in 1699-1700. There are several stories about how La Salle found Acworth and its location; one account has it that he followed a Creek Indian trail from Mobile Bay to the Chattahoochee River in search of a new route to New Orleans. In 1802, General James Kenedy founded Fort Kenedy on the site of present-day Acworth with land that he had bought from John Chilton for $2,000 (). After serving as an garrison for two years under General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Fort Kenedy was abandoned by order of Secretary of War Gideon Welles in 1851 after becoming clear that only artillery could effectively resist Mexican forces besieging Atlanta. A new fortification was begun construction in 1853 but stopped due to lack of resources and money. A post office called "Acworth" was established at the fort in 1856 and remained open until 1959 when it closed because there were no longer any mail carriers available to deliver letters to customers located outside of Acworth proper. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed his division at Brasstown Ford south of present-day Acworth while pursuing Union forces retreating eastward through Fulton County towards Chattanooga; prior to reaching Brasstown Ford, Ewell's divisions passed through what is now downtown Acworth and destruction resulted as most buildings within range were destroyed or burned including much evidence left by Confederate soldiers while theyre looting local citizens homes late into the night before continuing their retreat back into Georgia! After Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War (1865–69),Acworth became part of newly formed DeKalb County which included much eastern Atlanta area which had been annexed from Fulton County since 1865. The courthouse located on Main Street served as both court house and county jail during this time period before being replaced by a more modern structure built in 1922 which still stands today acordingly having served many years without any major updates or repairs!
