The name "Zephyrhills" comes from the Cherokee word zephon meaning "a west wind." Zephyrhills was settled by white people in 1892 and incorporated as a city on May 24, 1912. The original population of 16 had grown to over 50 by 1950 when it became the second largest city in Hillsborough County. Growth continued until 1990 when the population peaked at 21,815. Since then, it has slowly declined with only 14,898 residents living there as of 2000. Zephyrhills is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 16,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located on Jacksonville Beach. The first white settler in what is now Zephyrhills was John Hagerty in 1837. He founded a cabin on present-day Highway 1 and named it "Hagerty's Bluff." In 1841, Capt. David Collins arrived with his family from Kentucky and built a cabin on the beach near today's intersection of State Road A1A (then US 70) and CR 1225 (present-day US 9).Captain Collins' son Capt. Nathaniel Collins also settled in this area during the 1840s; he purchased land from Capt. David Collins at what is now CR 1225/State Road A1A for $100 per acre ($ ). Another early settler was James Fenton who arrived in 1845 with his family from Tennessee. He erected a log cabin on present-day State Road 414 (now US 301) near where he still lives today as well as another log cabin on Purdy Creek east of modern day downtown Zephyrhills. WhenJacksonville became an independent republic in 1928, Fenton refused to recognize it because he felt that its government should be based upon English common law rather than American law which he believed was subordinate to British law unconstitutional under George Washington's Constitution . In 1851, Jepson Bros., hardware stores started trading here after buying land north of present-day US 301 along Purdy Creek from James Fenton. They continued to do so until 1906 when they moved south to open their own store at current day Main Street and Third Avenue . After several years of business decline due to competition from other stores within Jacksonville, Jepson Bros., Inc., closed its doors for good around 1915 after selling all its assets excepting its trademark rights to Lowe’s Hardware Company USA who operated it until 1978.. In 1907 or 1908 Ansel Adams began taking pictures of Presque Isle Key lighthouse while living nearby with his wife Beatrice at her parents home on Ancliff Drive just north of the entrance into Presque Isle Key State Park . Adams took over management of the lighthouse when his wife died in 1918..
