However, during the Civil War years, Zephyrhills sided with Confederate States of America against the Union side. This led to extensive business losses and social unrest that lasted until Reconstruction ended in 1865. Afterward, Zephyrhills slowly regained its former prosperity as a small college town home to many prominent citizens including General Ulysses S Grant and Dr. Benjamin Spock. Today, Zephyrhills is an active community filled with culture and history which offers some unique experiences unavailable anywhere else in Florida – such as experiencing live music at local bars or attending traditional festivals like Hurricane Festival or Oktoberfest!
Zephyrhills was founded in 1888 by J.B. Withers and his brothers, George and Harry. The town became a boomtown due to the discovery of coal reserves in the area. By 1912, Zephyrhills had a population of over 500 residents. In 1933, Zephyrhills was annexed by Gainesville and has since been a part of that city.
