Zephyrhills, Florida is a city located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Zephyrhills was originally owned by the Key family and their heirs until 1923. From then until 1894, it was part of Osage County. In 1893, an act of Congress changed the name to Monroe County in honor of James K. Polk Jr., Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President and Secretary of State during his administration (1889-1893). The town began as a small farming village on Big Cypress Creek just east of present day Palm Beach Boulevard and Highway A1A (now Old US 1), north of what is now Dooley Road. In 1907 a railroad track was put down through Zephyrhills from Jacksonville to St Augustine; this became known as "The Trail" because so many people bought land around it for agriculture or development purposes that it stopped running completely in 1926 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Alonzo Mourning after he took office following United States involvement in World War I; however, some tracks still run today including one along present day Old US 1 south of Zephyrhills proper which parallels Lake Worth Boulevard/State Road 67B near Zephyrhills High School where live events are often held such as golf tournaments and NASCAR races weekend mornings before major league baseball games begin back at PGA Tour courses across town.) The area that now makes up Zephyrhills was first inhabited by the Timucua people, who lived near the mouth of the St Johns River. Spanish traders arrived in 1565 and began trading with Native Americans. In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years' War. After Britain lost control over Florida, Spain regained control and renamed it Santa Fe de Florida on July 16th, 1784. By 1800, there were over 1,000 Indian settlements in what is now Broward County including Zephyrhills which had a population of 100 residents. In 1853, James A. Robertson founded what would become known as Zephyrhills after purchasing land from Captain John Rodgers at $7 per acre (about $1 per sq ft). This purchase allowed Robertson to build a sawmill which he used to produce lumber for civilian use as well as building his home and other infrastructure such as roads and schools. The first school was opened in 1859 and soon after many other businesses followed suit including a grocery store, bank vaulting business, insurance company and even a brewery! In 1902, Zephry hills became an official city when it joined Miami-Dade County
In 1837, Zephyrhills was founded by a group of investors from Jacksonville, Florida. They named the town after the Greek godZephyrus, who had dried up the River Okeechobee. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center for citrus production. In 1886, Zephyrhills became a city.
