The history of Zephyrhills dates back to 1859 when two men named J.W. and Simeon Smith purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) of land on the edge of what is now Zephyrhills from Captain John Auld for $1 per acre ($40 worth then). They renamed their new land "Mountain View". The community began as a small hamlet with eight families and twelve businesses in 1879. By 1910, Zephyrhills had an active school system with forty students and twenty-four teachers; three hospitals; four churches; six farms; eighteen citrus orchards; sixteen residences; three wells; one printing press; one bank account - all within walking distance of each other! Today there are just over eighty residents - many descended from pioneers who first came to this area during the early 19th century when it was still under Spanish domination: sixty percent American citizens and thirty-five percent Europeans (mostly Germans). In 1959, when Interstate 95 was built through Polk County, Zephyrhills became an important interchange point for motorists travelling between Jacksonville and Tallahassee. However, today only a few people still live in Zephyrhills - most have moved away to more developed areas such as east Jacksonville or west Tallahassee since I-95 opened up Allentown Road into Polk County several years ago! In fact, while many people visit Zephyrites every day for groceries shopping or work purposes (the local library has a large collection of books about the area), very few people actually live hereabouts anymore! Although its name may suggest otherwise – tourism does not seem to be really what drives business activity in this sleepy little town these days! Instead it seems that people come here primarily because they enjoy fishing or swimming in its crystal clear waters which stretch for miles around both coasts! As if that weren’t enough reason to come – there are also plenty of parks dotting the downtown core where you can gather together with friends for picnics or playskool fun! Afternoon sunsets can often be seen shining down onto downtown's bright aluminum rooflines from high atop Point Lookout Lake while lovers stroll hand-in-hand along Armstrong Boulevard imbued with all that Gullah culture has to offer...and no children are ever asked to leave their parents' arms during any public events whatsoever!!! The post office at Zephyrhills was established in 1827 and remained an active center of commerce until after World War II when it closed its doors. In 1939, the United States military built Fort Brooke on what is now Lee Boulevard in order to protect Tampa Bay from Japanese attack during World War II. After the war, Fort Brooke served as a prison and then as a federal courthouse before being abandoned again in 1984. All that remains of the fort are some foundations and dozens of trees thatonce grew there

The town became an important agricultural center during the 1920s, with major production of oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and other fruits. In the 1930s, Zephyrhills became an important military base due to its location on the Florida Keys east of Miami. The town declined during World War II due to heavy losses from the Battle of Coral Gables and other engagements in that area. However, postwar prosperity brought new life to Zephyrhills as a shopping and entertainment district. It experienced another growth spurt in the 1980s as a result of newly created jobs in defense contractor Panasonic Corporation's plants in neighboring Miramar and Clearwater Beach.
