Zephyrhills is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Kissimmee-Hialeah Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by J.C. Bigham and Wm. Hinton as a result of the railroad being built through that area. The first post office opened in 1893 and the name changed to Zephyrhills in 1895 due to its high altitude (above sea level). The first store opened in 1896 and the first school closed in 1907 because of lack of funds. Zephyrhills annexed adjoining townships on November 3, 1908; these were Gradyville, Keystone Heights, Cypress Lakes, Riverview Estates and Willow Pond Village respectively. In 1932, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D Roosevelt announced his New Deal which included efforts to provide jobs for people who had lost their jobs during the Depression such as children working in their parents' homes or factory workers getting new employment through government programs like Social Security In 1933 Zephyrhills became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and seven council members with responsibility for all aspects of municipal life including fire protection, public works/road maintenance etc., education within city limits (including providing free public schools), zoning regulation and land use planning Four years later on October 15th 1937 voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build an expressway from Jacksonville through Polk County known then as "the Turnpike Project" thus Birthing today's community of Highway 95 nears completion just two miles east from downtown Zephyrhills less than 10 minutes drive from Interstate 495 making it easy for both visitors and residents access all that this diverse community has to offer without leaving home
Zephyrhills, Florida was founded in 1892 by Colonel John C. Haines and his wife, the former Miss Sarah E. Haines. The community was named for Zephyrus, one of the two prophets who helped send the biblical Moses away from slavery to freedom at Mount Sinai. The local citrus industry became very important to Zephyrhills during the early years of its development due to its location on a major citrus production area. In 1907, Zephyrhills became part of the county of Hillsborough County and began using a new system of numbering Streets and avenues within the town limits. In 1951, Zephyrhills voters approved an ordinance that renamed their main street after General Douglas MacArthur, United States Army Commander during World War II. The town's first post office opened in 1903 and continued serving until 1957 when it merged with neighbouring Dunedin into one larger community under the name Dunedin-Zephyrhills.
