Zephyrhills, Florida is known for its pantry and grocery stores. The area was first settled in the early 1800s by African Americans who worked on the plantations in the area. In 1892, a grocery store opened up in Zephyrhills and it became one of the most popular businesses in the community. The business continued to grow and by 1922, it had two stores. In 1935, a new grocery store was built and it became known as “The Avenue” store. It was here that J.C. Penney started selling clothing and other items from their factory in Atlanta, Georgia. The store continued to be one of the most popular in Zephyrhills until 1984 when it closed down due to financial difficulties. However, because of its popularity, The Avenue remains an important part of local history and culture today.

Zephyrhills is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,591 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Zephyrhills was established on December 12th, 1907. It was called "Mallory". The name of the town changed to "Zephyrhills" on October 1st, 1912. On July 18th, 1916 the town of Zephyrhills merged with Plantation and east side of Biscayne Bay Naval Air Station to form one municipality. On January 2nd, 1927 the municipality lost its charter and became a city under the name Fort Lauderdale. The annexation of Plantation brought an end to the naval air station connection and Zephyrhills reverted back to a village on November 3rd 1933 when it lost its charter as well as all property rights to Biscayne Bay Naval Air Station which had been part of Fort Lauderdale since 1916. It regained its charter as a city on November 3rd 1933 after successfully appealing for it from Fort Lauderdale City Hall which ruled that because both cities were separate municipalities they should have their own mayors and City Councils instead of sharing those powers with each other

It is part of the Pensacola-Bradenton-Fort Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1885 by John J. White and named after the east wind which inspired his whaling enterprise on Long Island Sound. After years of growth and development, Zephyrhills reached its peak as a resort community in the early 1920s with over 1,000 residents living there on 12 golf courses and 11 tennis courts. However, during World War II Zephyrhills became an important military base for the Allies due to its strategic location at the intersection of state Routes 10 and 301B. With dwindling populations and rapid economic decline over the following decades, Zephyrhills lost much of its past glory but has since regained some level of popularity as a holiday destination thanks to its wide variety of attractions including casinos; alligator hunting; water skiing; kayaking; sailing; fly fishing; scuba diving; hiking; golfing ;and wine tastings
