Gun targets have been a part of Zephyrhills, Florida for over 100 years. The first target shooting area in the town was on the old mill property. There were three small sheds used as target ranges. The first two were destroyed by fire in 1895, but the third shed still stands today and is used for storage. The use of guns to shoot targets began in 1864 when Captain John H. Tilton imported a cannon from France to defend Miami against pirates. Captain Tilton's cannons were later used at Fort Myers to protect that city from pirates as well. By 1865, shotguns had become popular in America and gun ranges began being established all across the country. In Zephyrhills, one of the earliest gun ranges was located on West Gulf Boulevard between Second Street and Third Street. This location would continue to be active until it burned down in 1922-23 due to careless mistakes made by operators during their target practice sessions! In 1898, Zephyrhills became home to one of the most famous pistol shootings events in American history when President McKinley was shot at his ranch by anarchist rebels trying to overthrow his rule! Gunfighters from all around Florida participated in this historic event which saw many lives saved including those of Flagler County sheriff George Wickersham and other law enforcement officers who responded to try and stop the gunmen! Although pistols weren't initially very popular among men, they soon became more common because they could be used effectively against targets such as dogs or cats! Over time, various types of firearms were introduced into this sport including rifles and shotguns which allowed for a wider variety of targets available for shooting! Zephyrhills, Florida was founded by George Rogers Clark on February 14, 1784. The town was named after the zephyrs that flew over the area during summertime. The first post office in Zephyrhills opened on December 1, 1811. In 1847, Zephyrhills became a town charter and incorporated as a city on May 15 of that year. On September 11, 1950, Zephyrhills merged with Plant City to form the present-day Jacksonville metropolitan area
