The area now known as Zephyrhills was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s and became a white community in the late 1800s. A post office called "Zephyrhills" was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1955. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,752 people, 518 households, and 358 families residing within the CDP. The population density was 2,569.1 people per square mile (1,021.2/km²). The town rebuilt with public works funds and new construction that began on July 1, 1953. Today much of what was lost during the fire has been recovered and restored to its original look including replacement clinics and businesses built to meet modern codes In 1957, zoning changes allowed for commercial development near Interstate 95 so Zephyros took off like never before becoming one of Kissimmee's fastest growing neighborhoods In 1978 an amusement park called Magic Mountain opened which quickly became one of Kissimmee’s top tourist attractions .
