Many people who lived in Zephyrhills at that time remember seeing planes fly over their town numerous times and then directions would be given as to where Allied forces were located. This gave rise to the nickname "The City of Flying Bombs."
Zephyrhills, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,533 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Zephyrhills was made by Spanish settlers on a small island near Fort Lauderdale in 1819. By 1826, all of Broward County had been organized into counties and Zephyrhills became one of them. The town was named after Zephyrus Ἀπόμενος Μικρός (Athamas), an Athenian general who participated in the Battle of Platina against the Roman army under Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The first store opened in 1926 and the first post office opened in 1928. In 1949, Zephyrhills annexed Plantation Key to form a single community with a combined population of over 25,000 people. In 1962-1964, construction began on Interstate 95 and it ran through much of what is now Zephyrhills before being diverted south to Davie which then connected to I-95W near Fort Lauderdale. In 2002-2004, development began on what would become Marlins Park which replaced downtown's old baseball stadium as home to Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins team from 2001 to 2006 and then again from 2013-present

By 1916, Zephyrhills had expanded to encompass over 100 homes and businesses. In 1940, Zephyrhills became an official town within the state of Florida. Today, Zephyrhills is considered one of the most vibrant communities in all of Florida. The history of Zephyrhills begins with John Hutton and George Witherow who both came from Yorkshire England in 1892 when they married into a family that owned land near Jacksonville Beach on Miami’s east coast. They decided to settle down down in this new community because Jacksonville wasn’t developing as quickly as they wanted it to be and they were frustrated with not being able to get ahead there like their friends did. They started building their home here and soon enough they had a small Schoolhouse which served as their Headquarters for local Agriculture Classes until 1927 when they opened up their own Businesses which included boatBuilding Jaxon Boatbuilders Inc., Truck Building Jaxon Trucks Inc., Fishing Tackle Store Jaxon Fisheries & Fishery Products Co., etc… After some time these Businesses grew so large that they moved out into larger Buildings which still remain today including the current Administration Building built in 1922 known locally as “The Yellow Brick House” while older buildings such as The White House (1892), The Blue Brick House (1926), & The Green Brick House (1940) are now privately owned along with numerous otherhistoric buildings serving various purposes throughoutZephyrhills history making it oneofFlorida's most unique Communities!
