Zephyrhills is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,737 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Zephyrhills was James Ellington in 1836. He named his land "Ella" after his daughter and namesake of Zephyrhills, Ella May Alcott. In 1841, J.M. Post moved to what is now Zephyrhills from Indianola and named it after himself - Post's Hill – despite objections from other pioneers who wanted their own name for their new community. It wasn't until 1881 that Tampa built its first railroad station on the same spot as today's Amtrak station which made travel to Zephyrhills much easier for residents and tourists alike. The post office operated here until 1925 when it moved to Sanfordville due to lack of space in downtown Orlando. The last time mail was delivered to Zephyrhills was during World War II when a detachment of U.S Air Force troops staged a daring raid into the town during Operation Torch; all mail got delivered safely back home without incident! A few years later, the city government decided that they didn’t need an office so they vacated it all and built themselves a courthouse (pictured) on State Road A1A south of town using proceeds from the sale of public lands adjacent to the original courthouse site – still standing today! In 1957, William Cosby bought 10% of TowneCorp Industries which included several businesses including Pembroke Farms Dairy where he resided until his death in 1984 aged 94 months old! Cosby had been Mayor designate for this area at-large prior to his death but never took office because he lacked running mates! In 1990 First National Bank merged withBankAtlantic Trust Company creating one giant financial institution throughout Central Florida but no change happened within Zephry Hills itself other than renamed streets like State Road 575 being changed from Maple Street South to Speedway Boulevard North & West etcetera! In 2013, after many years of discussion between local officials & developers working together through an effort called "Township by Township", zoning changes were made allowing mixed use development up ahead across Uptown Boulevard (& Old US 27) making it possible for even more businesses into this once sleepy little community ! After years of talk/gathering energy/effort nothing ever materialized except some renderings courtesy of one developer who evidently saw something he liked on Instagram & thought maybe there could be a market for this place outside just Polk County limits? So far nothing has materialized so we'll see if any official redevelopment happens or not….. oh well… At least we're still here 🙂

By 1860, Zephyrhills had 20 residents and a hotel/moral station operated by Captain John Ligon for $1 per day in 1861-1862. In 1892, JM&G Steel built an open-air steel mill on the banks of the river near present day Snodgrass Road and Gulf Boulevard. This mill produced over 1 million tons of steel annually until it closed in 1976 due to environmental concerns caused by stored water associated with the property remains today). The following year saw an increase in gambling activity which led to social problems within Zephyrhills; however this did not stop people from coming together to support each other through events such as annual dances or picnics held at local parks during summer months A new downtown development was planned but never completed due to budget cuts that impacted many aspects of life in Zephyrhills including public services like education and health care . In response to these public service issues, Mayor Mike Dunlap created “Zephyrs Hills Neighborhood Improvement District” which aimed to improve infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks and drainage systems throughout town . Additionally ,the district also developed plans for how best to attract businesses into town while preserving its culture and history
The first European to set foot on the island, in 1513, was Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral. The name "Zephyrhills" is derived from the Greek word zephyros, meaning 'a whirlwind'. In 1768, Spanish explorers discovered and named the island after Zephyrus, a god of the west wind.
