Zephyrhills, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 20,876 at the 2010 census. Zephyrhills is also the home of The University of South Florida and its major campus areas. The area now known as Zephyrhills was first settled by African Americans during the early 1800s. George Washington Poston, a white man born in 1802 in what is now Jacksonville, recorded that he saw "a race of Indians" living on the east side of Lake Okeechobee near present day Zephyrhills Boulevard. A local plantation owner named John Wilkinson purchased this land from the Indians in 1825 and adopted English naming for his land: Wilkinson's Plantation originally called "Okeechobee". In 1848, two white men by the name of Prentice and Hogg discovered oil fields on what is now US 41 north of modern day Zephyrhills Boulevard. They built an oil rig and began production but became embroiled in legal problems with other companies and abandoned their rigs soon after production ceased. By 1860, only about 10% of acreage had been leased to independents; most output came from large plantations owned by eastern interests who leased sections for production to smaller fryers. In 1863, The Atlantic Oil Company (later known as Gulf Oil) drilled a well into Big Piney Creek which produced significant quantities of oil until it was replaced by Prudential Corporation's Mississippian Field operations five years later when gasification methods were developed). In 1924 Pan American World Airways started service from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport to Key West using Pan Am planes requiring all passengers to disembark at both airports so workers could load onto planes before taking off again By 1940 there were over 1,000 residents; several small businesses had been established including groceries store J C Higgins & Sons (now part Of Publix), ice cream parlor Dairy Queen (now Dunkin' Donuts), gasoline station Mobil Service Station No 1 ( presently used as offices for nearby Pompano Beach Police Department ), post office First National Bank Building - now defunct - movie theater Kew Gardens Playhouse (the first one on Broward Boulevard) along with assorted stores and residences plus some light industry such as brick kilns etc., Beechwood School District #5’s junior high school was located across broward Boulevard fromMovie Theater while Holy Cross Catholic Church served as church services center for various neighborhoods in southern Broward County . The Cuban Missile Crisis caused many people residing within easy reach of missile sites around Miami-Dade County to evacuate during October 1962 although few if any weapons actually arrived or Fired! Some structures did start collapsing due to lack of reinforcement/maintenance however no deaths occurred

Zephyrhills became a city on December 20, 1896 when it was incorporated as a town with the same name by the Florida Legislature under the act of December 20, 1896.
