The first post office opened in 1898 and closed in 1903. In 1911, Zephyrhills incorporated as a village under the name "New Hope". In 1929, it changed its name to "Zephyrhills" after Zephyrus, one of the sons of Asclepius. In 1948, Zephyrhills became an official city when it annexed portions of Sanford and Oviedo. On July 1, 1957, Zephod City merged with Sanford to form Polk County. On December 15 of that year, Polk County approved a resolution to change the government from county-level government to township-level government so that more services could be provided within each community; this change became effective on January 1st 1958 when all townships were reorganized into cities under the new system. On November 14th 2017 voters in Polk County passed a referendum asking if they would like to become annexation members of Jacksonville Township (Manatee & Sarasota Counties)

Zephyrhills is a town in Broward County, Florida. The population was 5,882 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Zephyrhills was Abram Wimmer in 1884. Wimmer had been living in Fort Lauderdale and wanted to find a more remote place to farm his land. He built a cabin on what is now Northwest corner of Northwest 56th Avenue and Northwest 16th Street. In 1910, Wimmer's son, Will Hamerman opened up a grocery store on Northeast corner of Northeast 56th Avenue and Northeast 16th Street which became known as The Gables Grocery Store In 1923, Fenton Meeks bought the property from Abram Wimmer and founded Meeks' Floridian Stores Incorporated which he ran until his death in 1965. In 1966, Milton Iverson bought Meeks' Floridian Stores Incorporated and renamed it Zephyrhills Jewelers & Fine Outlet Center including the grocery store which he operated until his death in 1984. Iverson also added an addition to the northwest side of the center which became known as The Pavilion which served as both a shopping mall and office complex until its demolition in 2003 In 1987, Ernest Simmons purchased The Gables Grocery Store from Milton Iverson for $1 million In 1990, Simmons merged with JCPenney to form Sears Holdings Corporation In 1994, Sears Holdings Corporation made an acquisition of Kmart plc for $3 billion This led to Sears closing over 200 stores across 27 countries including Zephyrhills before bankruptcy sale in 2011 For most of its history Zephyrhills has been home to two major U S companies
The town of Zephyrhills, Florida was founded in 1892 by John C. Hickey and his family. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "y’hīr-dē’ła," meaning "place where the wind blows." The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the Panama Canal and its consequent increased traffic. By 1915, Zephyrhills had a population of over 2,000 people. Zephyrhills experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of the war effort. In 1942, Zephyrhills became one of several towns in Floridato be awarded an air force training station under Project AMEBA. This allowed for an influx of military personnel who helped to spur economic development in the town. In 1984, Zephyrhills was renamed after Dr. James A. Hickey, Jr., son of John C. Hickey Sr.. Dr. Hickey served as president and CEO of Children's Medical Research Foundation from 1976-1984 and played a significant role in helping to promote biomedical research throughout central Florida
