The town was founded in 1907 by a group of Germans who named it after the zephyrs that used to fly over their land during summertime. In 1922, mail service began between Jacksonville and Tallahassee through the Tallahassee branch ofthe Florida East Coast Railway; this service ended when railroads were nationalized during World War II. In 1948, Mr Fenton donated land to become what is now known as Cross Keys Park which housed local schools until 1984 when they were transferred to nearby West Hallam School Districts.. Zephyrhill's commercial heyday occurred during the early 1960s with several large stores including Gulf Coast Grocery Company, American Eagle Outfitters, Winn-Dixie Super Markets and Piggly Wiggly Markets all operating within one or two blocks of each other throughout downtown along Bayou Road near First Avenue Indian Ford Parkway / Third Street intersection.. However, due to changes brought about by suburban development over the years – primarily subdivisions allowed without zoning – downtown now consists mostly of single family homes with few businesses open except for occasional services like libraries or health clinics.. After plumbing hookups became available throughoutDuval County in the late 1960s following construction of new Interstate 95 southbound lanes just east of town - comprehensive water supplies arrived for residents shortly thereafter making Downtown such a rarity these days .. Today much of what used to make Downtown such an interesting stopoff on your walk or errand around town has been replaced with modest housing developments while original restaurants have closed up shop entirely .. During its heyday Zephryrhill also boasted several professional sports teams including baseball/softball Panthers (1948), football Jaguars (1956-1960), basketball Buccaneers (1973-1976), volleyball Gators (1978-1981) – both men’s teams competing in Central Florida conferences Sun Belt Conference before being disbanded following NCAA sanctions – golfers playing at TPC Golf Course off Bayou Rd./First Ave.- most notably Rickie Fowler who has won multiple tournaments hereabouts starting back in 2006 according to many sources culminating Sunday’s victory over Phil Mickelson at Quail Hollow Resort & Spa .. Today there are no professional sports teams active in either sport locally or remotely within Duval County... From longtime resident Gayle Wagner: "I remember going out into town after school one day back when it still had newspapers that you could pick up." She continued "I would go outside where I used to sit onBayou Rd./First Ave.-to read them." Ms Wagner went onto say "There wasn't any traffic back then either so it would always be quiet." Given that Duval Countysuburban sprawl has completely obliterated much of downtownZephryrhill should probably ISO publicize their oblivion more often!
