Zephyrhills, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Zephyrhills was J.W. McGee who arrived in 1835 from Georgia. He built a log cabin on the site that still stands today and named it "McGee's Grove." In 1838, James A. McMillin moved to Zephyrhills from Illinois and founded the McMillin Mill which produced lumber until it closed in 1924. In 1892, George Waddell arrived from Tennessee and started farming on acres he had bought from John Litton near what is now FM 972 Southwestern Boulevard and US 1/US 8 east of I-10 West (now SR 192). He named his farm "Zephyrhills" after the song by Gilbertand Sullivan called "Helsinki". The first post office was established here in 1893 under the name of Garden City but changed to its present name three years later when postal service was extended to Polk County via horseback riders! The First National Bank opened its doors here on October 15th, 1907 with $5,000 capitalization! It served as one of only two banks west of Tampa Bay open during that time period! The bank went out of business within six months after opening but left an lasting legacy on this community as one of its main donors helped found Stonington Presbyterian Church which remains active to this day! 4ECS Electric Cooperative became operational in 1948 with a membership of over 150 members! They continue to serve our area today with their innovative energy plans including renewable energy options like solar panels and biomass boilers! Today they are one of Southeast Florida’s longest running cooperative businesses ! In 1949 Jerald D. Dunham began construction on what would become known as Dunham Place - now home to Zephyrhills Elementary School &Community plaza shopping center - adding another important landmark to Zephyrhills history along with his wife Lois Eads' church – First Methodist Church – which became official occupancy dates July 3rd 1951!!! Mrs Dunham gave her gift certificate for $1 per month towards her parish's maintenance fees back then so services were free for all residents!! That gift has continued into our current day !!

By World War II, Zephyrhills had become one of the most important military installations in the southeastern United States. After the end of the war, Zephyrhills continued to grow and expand into its present-day boundaries. Today, Zephyrhills is an unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida, about 30 miles east of Gainesville.
