Zephyrhills, Florida is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida and part of Palm Beach County. The population was 4,901 at the 2000 census. It is located on State Road 712, about 20 miles north-northwest of downtown Miami. The area that now makes up Zephyrhills was first settled by Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. European exploration began in 1810 when Captain James Cook discovered Indian land to the southwest of Zephyrhills. Each year from 1811 to 1816, another American ship explored the mouth of River Okeechobee which flows into Everglades Lake; however no settlements were established owing to hostile Native Americans and lack of access to water supplies. In 1821–22 Colonel John Butler built a fort at Fort Myers on Coos Bayou which had been abandoned by its previous occupants due to Ulysses S Grant's War with Spain. The citizens of Fort Myers petitioned for annexation into Miami County in 1826 and moved into their new town during that year's county meeting. In 1830, four men (John Aiken, George Stephenson, Elias Howe and Samuel Morse) founded what would become Flagler County while working ascontractors for William Browder who planned to build a railway through Apalachicola Valley from Pensacola eastward across Panhandle Florida via Lake Okeechobee () and Key West (). AfterBrowder's death in 1830, his partners divided his property among themselves without furnishings or tools so they could commence construction without competition (). The first permanent settler arrived in 1831 when Wm Horry purchased 8 acres (3 ha) near present-day intersection of SR 712/SR 914 from Major Prentiss Marshall (). Zephyrhills is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. Zephyrhills is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Zephyrhills was J.C. Read, who arrived in 1867. Read and his family built a frame cottage on the present site of Main Street and Telegraph Road about two miles west of present day Zephyrhills on Ponce de Leon Bayou. A post office called Read's Ferry was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1914. In 1888, John Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day Zephyrhills from the Kissimmee Indian tribe for $8 per acre ($/km²). He named it "Fenton's Swamp". In 1915 Fenton donated an additional 2,000 acres (10 km²) to the state of Florida for use as a public airport strip adjacent to his farmstead Airport Park where he had been living since 1912 when he got permission from then-Governor Tom Jones to build an airport on that land grant In 1931–1932 renamed Zephyrhills Municipal Airport after railroad executive Harry Hines who donated $5 million for its construction program; Hines also served as president of American Airlines (now American Express). The airport opened with six daily flights serving Tampa and St Petersburg airports before becoming fully operational with over 100 flights a week by 1945 Airlink Airlines flying out of both terminals by 1946 using leased Boeing 727s operated by Air America which became successor airline to US Airways When Pan Am acquired Aeroflot in 1987 they deleted all references to Aeroflot from their timetables but continued to call it "Aeroflot Miami" until their closure in 1997 deeming it too confusingly similar to Sovietair which they had acquired three years earlier
