Zephyrhills, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Zephyrhills is located on State Road 441 just south of I-4 and east of US 27. The first settlement in what is now Citrus County was called "New Zion" by early pioneers who arrived in 1813. They named their new village after John Quincy Adams, the third president of the United States. In 1836, New Zion was renamed Zephyrhills because of a thunderstorm that name mentioned in biblical scripture. In 1851, two brothers founded the city of Jacksonville as a post office and trading center on the southern edge of present-day Citrus County. The brothers were Jno. Wray andArthur Aikenberger and they named their new town for General James Buchanan, who had been elected President that year as part of the Whig Party coalition government which included Buchanan's Democratic rival Andrew Johnson. In 1906, Zephyrhills became an incorporated municipality with a governing board made up entirely of women voters under Republican Mayor Florence Hanks Benson; this marked the first time that any community in Florida had adopted such a policy during its early years as an organized municipality (the practice continued until 1958). At that time there were only three other municipalities within citrus county: Fort Myers Beach (founded 1889), Pompano Beach (founded 1912), and Jupiter (established 1915). A few years later – in 1910 – Jacksonville merged with nearby Stonington to form another consolidated municipality known as "Citrus City". However, due to differences between Jacksonville's business model and Stonington's more megalomaniacal approach to municipal governance – including its insistence upon having exclusive control over all aspects of local commerce within its boundaries –Stonington failed to gain full incorporation into Citrus City until 1945 when it did so via special legislation passed by then-Governor Claude Kirkpatrick; this also occurred despite strong objections from some keycitrus county leaders who saw consolidation as an opportunity for Jacksonville to usurp citruse county's preeminent economic status withoutctural justification or consenting participation from those same leaders themselves! Kirkpatrick later said he decided against incorporation because he felt citruse county could do better itself through self-promotion than through incorporation; however, this decision may have been influenced by his personal dislike for Jaguars player George Blanda – one of several players from Jacksonville whom Kirkpatrick came into contact with while still serving as Governor–and Blanda's subsequent unyielding resistance to any efforts by Citrus City officials to improve his playing career prospects outside the city limits. Zephyrhills is a small city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a log village on a small island in the St. Johns River near what is now Sanford. In 1871, settlers from Georgia platted what became Zephyrhills and named it for French explorer Nicolas-Jacques Conte after his visit to the area in 1779. The first post office was established in 1872, and by 1902, Zephyrhills had a population of 100 residents. In 1909, Zephyrhills developed into an agricultural center with fruit orchards and corn fields; it also became known for its citrus products production. A cotton gin was built in 1913 and remains operational today as the only one of its kind in Florida. During World War II, Zephyrhills served as headquarters for Army Air Forces Group 1 during their invasion of Europe; later that year it also became home to Naval Station Miami when that station was activated at Fort Myers Beach on May 10th 1944 pursuant to President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal Plan to create jobs during wartime (the Miami Navy Yard opened two years earlier). On July 16th 1957 Hurricane Ike hit southern Florida killing more than 60 people (of which 25% were directly related to agriculture) within hours of landfall while causing extensive damage across much of central Florida including Gadsden County where Zephyrhills lies; over $2 billion worth of crops were lost due to storm surge alone In total this made Ike one of the worst hurricanes on record with winds up to 125 mph (200 km/hr).
