Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Winter Springs has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and today many of the original dwellings still stand. The first Europeans to visit Winter Springs were Spanish explorers in 1692. A post office called "Winter Springs" was established in 1837, but it never caught on as a village due to its remoteness from larger towns in the region. In 1868, James Gadsden built what is now known as Gadsden Hall on land he purchased from Capt. John Fellows Sr., one of several early settlers who built winter residences hereabouts during this era of rapid growth around Orlando and Kissimmee counties. By 1871, when Gadsden sold his holdings to Colonel Thomas Moultrie ( brother-in-law of Ulysses S Grant), Winter Springs had become an important center within Polk County for citrus production and other agricultural pursuits. The railroad arrived in Winter Springs in 1907 and soon made it one of the most important transportation hubs in central Florida; passenger trains stopped at Winter Springs station until 1963 when Amtrak became operational nearbyand began running service through downtown Orlando only

Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,788 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Springs was founded in 1868 by James Waddell and his family as a seasonal summer resort on White Sands Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1916, Winter Springs became a municipality and changed its name to Winter Springs Township. In 1982, Winter Springs incorporated as a city and changed its name to Winter Springs, Florida. In 1895, following the construction of the Panama Canal by American entrepreneur Andrew Mellon, winter vacationers began arriving in numbers in what is now Winter Springs Township for business trips and pleasure visits to Key West then St Petersburg before returning home during the canal shutdown time periods (late December through early January). A group of business men from Miami purchased five acres of land east of Third Street near present-day Broward Boulevard for $3 per acre with intentions of developing it into a holiday resort called "The Isles". Work began on the resort August 10th 1896 by hired hands from JT Weller's plantations near Tampa Bay under direction of President John Dillingham who also served as Mayor of Tampa at that time. After two years hard work and many financial setbacks due to lack of available financiers; The Isles Resort opened its doors October 15th 1898 to much fanfare from both locals and visitors alike! Throughout those first few years there were only 12 guests/night but word soon spread about this unique property with beautiful white sand beaches which could accommodate up to 16 guests/night each! From 1898 until 1924 when most all resorts closed down because they were not able to keep up with increase in tourism demand; The Isles Resort was one of only four hotels remaining open along US 1 corridor between Tampa Bay and Key West! For many years people either drove their cars or walked distance from their homes just to visit this special place that had been built just for them!!! Today much like then – Times have changed & aspects such as internet access have made it possible for everyone including adults & children alike (& even pets) to enjoy all that winter hasto offer without leaving their warm beds!!!!
Winter Springs, Florida was originally founded by the Seminole Tribe of Indians in 1763. The town was named after wintering season and springs near the present-day town. The first post office in Winter Springs was established in 1848. In 1916, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing Christmas as an official American holiday. In 1922, Winter Springs became an incorporated city. In 1959, the United States Postal Service moved its operations from Kissimmee to Winter Springs to save on postage costs.
