The first settlers in Winter Springs were James and Anna Bowers who arrived in 1819. They were followed by other families over the next several years until there were only six people living in the community when it was founded on December 15, 1836. The original post office was named for Anna’s brother-in-law General Isaac Shelby who served as Governor of Florida from 1837 to 1840. He donated land for a courthouse and jail which were built on what is now First Street. A school was started in 1846 and two churches, one Baptist and one Methodist, were erected soon afterwards; both schools closed around 1900. The early days of winter sports here included skiing (a very new sport) and ice skating on frozen ponds! Today, there are many ways to enjoy all that Winter Springs has to offer including art galleries, wineries and restaurants; shopping malls; golf courses; tennis courts; active recreation areas such as swimming pools and parks; an annual pumpkin festival - plus much more! Winter Springs, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Winter Springs was established in 1892 as a farming community and served as a transportation stop on the Stonington Railroad. The name "Winter Springs" comes from January 16th, 1893 when President Grover Cleveland delivered an address at nearby Rollins College. After President Cleveland's visit, several residents decided to rename their community after him in recognition of his contributions to American culture. In 1897, Winter Springs joined the newly formed Maritimes Railway and became its terminus for passenger service between Orlando and Jacksonville. Passenger trains continued terminating here until 1971 when Amtrak took over all services. In 1909, Winter Springs experienced its first fire which destroyed most of the town's buildings including the old college building where President Cleveland spoke two years later. The fire also caused extensive damage to many other businesses including stores, churches and homes in what is now known as Old Town Winter Springs. It wasn't until 1916 that construction began on what would become today's Main Street which would connect downtown with Spring Lake Avenue and eventually make way for the city's current development patterns. This $4 million project included turning one side of Main Street into a pedestrian mall with retail shops and restaurants while demolishing much of Old Town Winter Springs to make way for new structures such as Christmastime celebrations venues (The KFC Theater), government offices (City Hall) and professional apartments (the Four Seasons). In 1927, Hurricane Agnes hit Florida Keys causing widespread damage across Osceola County but particularly within Winter Springs where nearly all business were damaged or destroyed by either wind or rain storm surges alone including churches that were turned into houses or storehouses; schools that were closed; post office; bakery; hotel; millinery shop; blacksmiths forge tools machining iron etc.; many residences lost their roofs even though they had been wired for electricity because they were consideredinsured against such events by virtue of their property ownership status under state law at that time- something few families could afford to do without being forced out onto the street during bad weather conditions like this one occurred annually during these tough times due through experimentation with some form of electric power distribution system then being put into place throughout rural areas beginning to show results about slowing down destructive fires caused by lightning strikes along wires running through neighborhoods thenceforth becoming more commonplace during these trying times just prior to World War II before giving way completely following war to increasingly technological advances thanks largely in large measure to GI Bill programs like those Drafted Into Service During WWII who helped revive economy back home

Winter Springs became a village in 1903 and a city in 1959. In 1966, Winter Springs joined the Miami-Dade County government as an incorporated municipality with its own police department and mayor. As an annexed city, Winter Springs experienced rapid growth during the late 1960s and 1970s because of its proximity to Miami and its role as a center for healthcare and education. Between 1978 and 1984, Winter Springs became home to one of South Florida's first medical schools, the University of South Florida School of Medicine.
