On December 12, 1861, a group of Confederate rebels attacked Union troops here; this event became known as the Battle of Winter Springs. The town started to grow rapidly after itpost office opened in 1875 and began to develop its own schools and businesses- many residents were involved in local politics at that time. In 1907, Harry Hinton developed an oil well at nearby Clearwater Beach which helped start modern day oil production in Florida After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, much more development took place within the community as people created new businesses including a television station (WFTV) and several hospitals In 1962-1964 Summer Fields Elementary School was built adjacent to US 1 where children from all over Polk County could attend . It served as a model for several other elementary schools across Florida until it closed down due to budget cuts some years ago In 1979 State Senator Ralph Yarborough moved into Winter Springs from Plantation Hills after winning election to fill Don Young’s vacated Senate seat In 1990 James Akins purchased abandoned Speedway property off US 1 next to Spring Lake which served as home base for Akins Aviation until it went out of business around 2007 After state government consolidation Planters Bay consolidated with WinterSpring through annexation became Township Government Area effective January 1st 2009 With population growth continued there has been more development potential for services such as housing said township planner John Pizzello

After visiting several towns en route to Mobile Bayou, Grant decided that Winter Springs would be his headquarters for the campaign. In January 1866, General Grant arrived at Winter Park Depot and took possession of Christmas Tree House as his winter headquarters until he could move into Arlington Hall near Memphis. In 1868-69 Major General James Ewing commanded an expedition against Seminole Indians in what is now central Florida.winter springs became part of military control after Indian removal laws were passed by Congress in 1830 which ended slavery throughout much of America including Florida
