Winter Springs is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton–Pasco Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first winter place in what is now Winter Springs was established near present day DeLand by Colonel John H. Crawford on December 12, 1853. This location became known as Crawford's Station because it served as a stop for wagon trains headed to the central area of Florida during the winter months. Colonel Crawford was instrumental in helping to start the Winter Springs Club which would become one of Polk County's most important organizations and provide social and economic opportunities for its citizens. In 1865, General James Sabin relieved General Don Carlos Buell with orders to move his Confederate forces from Tallahassee eastward into Polk County so that they could be more effectively used against Sherman's Union army while Confederates were still fighting in Alabama and Georgia. On February 10, 1893, President Grover Cleveland announced that he had selected Winter Springs as site for a new national capital located on Lake Okeechobee west of Fort Myers; this event marked the beginning of what would become one of America's most powerful infrastructure projects - a series of major construction projects designed to improve transportation and connect large metropolitan areas around the country through various means including water dredging and land acquisition. The city quickly grew around the new capital with many businesses being founded in anticipation of its growth; such favorites as Coca Cola Bottling Company (1912), Master Lock & Key (1920), Colonial Life Insurance Company (1896), First National Bank (1893) are among some prominent names that have been associated with Winter Springs over time. Many residents also began moving into these growing communities during this time period due to their warm weather conditions and easy access to jobs within commuting distance. During World War II, much effort was put into making Winter Springs an ideal wartime headquarters; many industries like shipbuilding were moved here due to the shortage of other places in South Florida where troops could be stationed warily under threat of attack from both Axis powers and Allied forces alike. In particular, several airfields were built here including Northwest Field which housed fighter aircraft from nearby Daytona Beach Municipal Airport; West Palm Beach Airfield which handled bombers from Plant City Naval Air Station adjacent thereto; Belleair Naval Air Station – homeported USS "Belle Isle" – which provided support for naval operations off Cuba; Gulfport Army Ammunition Depot – responsible for providing munitions storage facilities deep inside Tampa Bay – as well as numerous smaller facilities scattered throughout downtown during this time frame In addition, dozens of factories were closed or moved out due to enemy bombing raids or lack of materials available elsewhere within South Florida – some famous examples include Chrysler Corporation’s Plant Workers' Village located just north-westof downtown on US-1A overlooking Clearwater Harbor; Sunbeam Glass & Mirror Company’s Monroe Factory at 601 E Main Street across from US-1A south side; Jordon Aircraft Corporation’s Hawthorne Factory at 4500 Park Blvd., just outside Jacksonville proper - all while American Tobacco Corporation’s Winston Churchill plant operated successfully despite extremely high casualties suffered by their employees during Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor . After World War II ended there continued significant growth thanks largely to Interstate 95 being constructed connecting Jacksonville with other large southeastern cities via this then newly developed region ; development along I-95 has led directlyto increased job opportunities and housing prices within our community today .Today Winter Springs enjoys continue strong economic stability thanks primarily to its partnership with local government entities such as: The City Councilmember Jeffry Meeks who has worked tirelessly over many years towards creating unique partnerships between our community members & elected officials resultant in diminished crime rates& improved public safety ); Mayor Tony Yarborough who remains focused upon enhancing quality public services while ensuring that everyone has access regardless socioeconomically status
Winter Springs was founded in 1881 by the Mormon pioneers. The town was named after President Brigham Young's winter home in Utah. The first post office opened in 1882, and the first store opened in 1886. In 1898, the town became a city.
